The one rule

Never leave a baby and a pet alone together — not for a second, not even a pet you trust completely. Everything else on this site is secondary to this.

Kit

Equipment that removes
a decision at 3am.

Vigilance fails when you are exhausted, and you are going to be exhausted. Everything here exists to make the safe option the automatic one.

Physical management is what protects a baby. Not good intentions.
A dog standing behind a tall stair gate fitted across a doorway
Barrier

Tall hardware-mounted baby gate

Pressure-mounted gates get pushed through. Wall-fixed, and tall enough that jumping it is not casual.

The job it doesMakes the nursery genuinely off-limits rather than nominally off-limits.

Retreat

Crate large enough to stand and turn

Only ever a safe space, never punishment. Introduce it months early so it is already the dog’s favourite place.

The job it doesGives the dog somewhere to remove itself to, which prevents most conflict outright.

Cats

Cot net or mesh cover

Cats seek warmth and a cot is one of the warmest places in the house. Taut and well-fitted, with nothing loose near the baby.

The job it doesHandles the one risk supervision cannot cover — when you are asleep.

Calm

Lick mat and slow feeder

Licking is genuinely calming for dogs. A smeared mat buys ten quiet minutes during a feed or a nappy change.

The job it doesTurns the baby’s noisiest moments into the dog’s best moments.

Hygiene

Lidded, dog-proof nappy bin

Nappy contents are extremely attractive to dogs and genuinely hazardous. Foot pedal, locking lid, off the floor if possible.

The job it doesRemoves a daily hazard almost nobody anticipates until it happens.

Habituation

Baby sound desensitisation audio

Recorded newborn crying, played very quietly over weeks and paired with something good. Free versions exist; paid sets are better organised.

The job it doesMeans the first real cry your dog hears is not the first cry it has ever heard.

Routine

Hands-free lead and treat pouch

Walking the dog while pushing a pram is where most routines collapse. A waist lead and a pouch you never have to think about.

The job it doesProtects the routine, which is the thing that protects everyone else.

Awareness

Video monitor with a wide view

Not a substitute for a closed door and never to be treated as one. Useful for seeing where the dog has settled before you walk in carrying the baby.

The job it doesInformation, not protection. The gate is the protection.

How these links work Buttons are inactive until our affiliate applications are approved — we would rather show you nothing than a broken or untracked link. When they go live they will be marked as affiliate links and we earn a commission at no extra cost to you. No manufacturer has paid to appear here.

What we deliberately do not recommend

Anti-bark and shock collars

Aversive devices suppress the behaviour you can see without changing how the dog feels — and around a baby, the behaviour you can see is your early warning system. Professional consensus is that they raise the risk of aggression rather than lowering it.

Calming supplements as a substitute for management

Some have modest evidence behind them and your vet may suggest one. None of them make it safe to leave a baby and a dog together, and buying one should never replace a gate or a referral.

Anything marketed as making a dog “baby-proof”

No product does this. Any listing implying it is telling you something untrue about a serious risk, and we will not link to it.
